Beckman & Associates is dedicated to providing cutting edge technology and treatments
in order to deliver superior care to our patients. We believe strongly in continuing
education which challenges not only ourselves but also our patients to acquire new
knowledge.
Our physical therapist specializes in the diagnosis, treatment and management
of infants, children and adolescents with a variety of congenital, developmental,
neuromuscular, skeletal, or acquired disorders who may have limitations in any of
the following areas:
-gross motor development (see Gross Motor Milestones)
-balance/coordination
-strength/endurance
-motor
planning
-joint mobility
-activities of daily living
-keeping up with their peers
-sensory
processing/integration
We also provide Neuro-Developmental Treatment, also known as
NDT. The NDT treatment method is a hands-on approach that is used with people who
have central nervous system insults that create difficulties in controlling movement.
Our physical therapist has completed advanced training in NDT and works closely with
individuals with neurological challenges (e.g. cerebral palsy, stroke, head injury),
helping them to become as independent as possible.
Our Physical Therapist also provides CranioSacral Therapy. CST is a gentle, hands-on
method of evaluating and enhancing the functioning of a physiological body system
called the craniosacral system - comprised of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid
that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. Using a soft touch generally
no greater than 5 grams, or about the weight of a nickel, practitioners release restrictions
in the craniosacral system to improve the functioning of the central nervous system.
We
also offer specialization in pediatric massage. The benefits of baby massage are:
improves functioning of the gastrointestinal tract, improves digestion, helps to
normalize muscle tone, improves circulation, and affects the lymphatic drainage/enhances
the immune system.
Our physical therapist is also trained in therapeutic taping.
Taping is sometimes used by therapists for people who have difficulties with muscle
control caused by developmental or neurological conditions. Taping might be used
temporarily to help predict the response a child might have to a more permanent form
of support like an ankle orthotic (brace). It might also be used to reduce the effect
of spasticity on movement at a specific joint, to support a weak muscle, or to encourage
a weak muscle to move.
Our PT works collaboratively with individuals, family, caregivers
and physicians to develop comprehensive treatment programs based on the principles
of human neurology and physiology. Individuals who have minimal to severe motor difficulties
can benefit from the combination of the NDT approach, CranioSacral Therapy, massage,
and taping techniques that are used at this clinic.
